Sand Calculator: How to Calculate How Much Sand You Need

Whether you’re filling a sandbox, leveling a patio base, topping up a pool filter, bedding a horse arena, or mixing concrete, knowing exactly how much sand to order is the difference between a smooth project and an expensive second delivery. Sand is heavy, bulk quantities are sold by the ton or cubic yard, and errors in estimation compound quickly.

This guide walks through the complete sand calculation formula, explains how density varies by sand type, gives you coverage tables, bag count references, and answers every common question about sand quantity estimation.

Sand Calculator

The Sand Calculation Formula

Calculating how much sand you need follows the same volume formula used for any bulk material. All measurements must be in the same unit before calculating.

Step 1 — Calculate Volume in Cubic Feet Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (ft) = Cubic Feet

Step 2 — Convert to Cubic Yards Cubic Feet ÷ 27 = Cubic Yards

Step 3 — Convert to Tons Cubic Yards × Density (tons/yd³) = Tons

Step 4 — Add Overage Tons × 1.10 = Final Order Quantity (10% waste standard)

Quick Shortcut Formula

If you know your area in square feet and depth in inches:

(Square Feet × Depth in Inches) ÷ 324 = Cubic Yards

Then multiply cubic yards by the sand density in tons per cubic yard to get tons.

Example: A 12 ft × 20 ft patio base, 2 inches of leveling sand: (240 × 2) ÷ 324 = 1.48 cubic yards × 1.3 = 1.93 tons + 10% = order 2.1 tons

Sand Density: The Key to Accurate Weight Calculations

Sand density varies significantly based on moisture content, grain size, and mineral composition. This is the most important variable when converting from volume to weight, since sand is sold by the ton at most bulk suppliers.

River sand1,600 – 1,750 kg/m³100 – 110 lbs/ft³1.35 – 1.5 tons/yd³
Pool/filter sand (silica)1,600 – 1,760 kg/m³100 – 110 lbs/ft³1.35 – 1.5 tons/yd³
Play sand1,440 – 1,600 kg/m³90 – 100 lbs/ft³1.2 – 1.35 tons/yd³
Fill sand1,440 – 1,680 kg/m³90 – 105 lbs/ft³1.2 – 1.45 tons/yd³
Arena sand (dry)1,440 – 1,600 kg/m³90 – 100 lbs/ft³1.2 – 1.35 tons/yd³

Standard planning value: Use 1.3–1.5 tons per cubic yard for dry sand in most applications. For wet or compacted sand, use 1.5–1.7 tons per cubic yard.

How Much Does a Yard of Sand Weigh?

One cubic yard of sand weighs approximately:

  • Dry sand: 2,600 – 3,000 lbs (1.3 – 1.5 tons)
  • Wet sand: 3,000 – 3,400 lbs (1.5 – 1.7 tons)

The weight of a yard of sand depends primarily on moisture. Rain-soaked sand delivered by truck can weigh significantly more than the dry density you calculated — which is why purchasing by the ton is often more reliable than ordering by the yard for large projects.

Pool Sand Calculator

Pool sand has two main uses: as filter media inside a sand filter, and as a leveling base beneath above-ground pools. These are completely different applications with very different quantities.

How Much Sand for a Pool Filter?

Pool filter sand (typically #20 silica sand, 0.45–0.55mm) fills the filter tank. The amount depends on your filter model — check the manufacturer’s label on the filter for the exact weight. Common residential pool filters require:

Filter Tank SizeSand Required
14″ diameter tank100 lbs (2 × 50 lb bags)
16″ diameter tank150 lbs (3 × 50 lb bags)
18″ diameter tank200 lbs (4 × 50 lb bags)
22″ diameter tank300 lbs (6 × 50 lb bags)
24″ diameter tank350 lbs (7 × 50 lb bags)

How Many 50 lb Bags of Sand for an 18 Foot Round Pool Base?

For a leveling sand base under an 18 ft round above-ground pool at 2 inches deep:

  • Floor area: 0.7854 × 18² = 254 sq ft
  • Volume: (254 × 2) ÷ 324 = 1.57 cubic yards
  • Tons: 1.57 × 1.3 = 2.04 tons
  • In 50 lb bags: approximately 81–82 bags of 50 lb play sand (rounded up to 85)

Most pool supply professionals recommend 1 inch of leveling sand, which roughly halves this quantity — approximately 40–45 bags for an 18 ft pool. Confirm with your pool’s installation instructions.

Horse Arena Sand Calculator

Sand selection and depth are critical for equestrian footing. Too little sand causes compaction and hoof concussion; too much causes fatigue. The wrong grain size creates dust, holds moisture poorly, or moves under hooves.

Concrete Sand Calculator

Concrete sand (also called sharp sand or coarse sand) is a key ingredient in concrete and mortar mixes. The standard mix for general-purpose concrete uses approximately 2 parts sand to 1 part cement to 4 parts aggregate by volume (the 4-2-1 rule).

Sand Required per Cubic Yard of Concrete

A cubic yard of concrete (at a standard 4-2-1 mix) requires approximately:

  • 0.50 cubic yards of sand (about 0.65 tons of dry concrete sand)
  • 0.25 cubic yards of cement
  • 1.0 cubic yard of coarse aggregate

For a 10-yard concrete pour, plan for approximately 6–7 tons of concrete sand if mixing on site.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Calculate How Much Sand I Need?

Measure the length and width of your area in feet and multiply them for square footage. Convert your depth from inches to feet by dividing by 12. Multiply length × width × depth in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. Multiply cubic yards by the sand density (1.3–1.5 tons/yd³ for dry sand) to get tons. Add 10% for waste. Shortcut: (Square feet × depth in inches) ÷ 324 = cubic yards.

How Much Does 1 Ton of Sand Cover?

At 2 inches deep, 1 ton of dry sand covers approximately 125 square feet. At 1 inch deep, it covers about 249 square feet. At 3 inches, coverage drops to approximately 83 square feet. These figures use a typical dry sand density of 1.3 tons per cubic yard.

How Many Bags of Sand Do I Need?

A 50 lb bag of sand yields approximately 0.56 cubic feet. To calculate bags: divide your total cubic feet by 0.56, then round up to the nearest whole bag and add 10%. For 100 sq ft at 2 inches deep (16.7 cu ft), you need approximately 30 bags of 50 lb sand. For anything over 1 cubic yard (27 cu ft), bulk delivery is more economical.

What Is the Density of Sand in kg/m³?

Dry loose sand has a density of approximately 1,440–1,600 kg/m³. Dry packed sand is 1,600–1,750 kg/m³. Wet sand is 1,760–2,000 kg/m³. The standard value used in most construction calculations is 1,600 kg/m³ for general dry sand.

How Many 50 lb Bags of Sand for an 18 Foot Pool?

For a 2-inch leveling base under an 18 ft round above-ground pool, you need approximately 81–85 bags of 50 lb play sand. For a 1-inch base (the minimum recommended depth), approximately 40–45 bags. Always check your pool manufacturer’s installation guide for the specific base depth they recommend, as it varies by pool model and liner type.

What Is 1 Ton of Sand?

One US ton of sand is 2,000 lbs. At standard dry sand density of approximately 1.3–1.5 tons per cubic yard, 1 ton occupies roughly 0.67–0.77 cubic yards (18–21 cubic feet). Visually, 1 ton of sand fits in a volume roughly the size of a large chest freezer or half the bed of a standard pickup truck.
